I roamed the world over, seen those who call themselves Goth, gothic and Gothic. I have never claimed to be Goth, but I have said I was Gothic, after all it what inside you that defines who you are. This has always been one of the important rules of Gothic community, what you are on the inside was always more important than the baggage of flesh you wear on your bones.
For the first time, I met someone who judged ones Gothick-ness by the color of ones skin, thinking that to be Gothic, you have to be white and dress in BDSM, or other form of dress. In other words, the symbolic facade of the shell we wear. Maybe this person is interpreting being gothic as being from the Goths of old Europe during roman times. If that was the interpretation, then no one should call themselves Goth unless they can prove lineage to that long vanished empire.
Indeed some have lived isolated from the rest of the Gothic community and their world-view has become skewed into a perception that they feel they know what is Gothic. They never learned it not how much you dress and how much outlandish you can costume yourself. If you can’t even pick up a work of Poe and appreciate its true meaning, you are definitely not gothic. I myself have always been fond and appreciative of Poe and others of this excellence.
Further, these false Goths don’t even know that much of what they wear are borrowed from other cultures that are not in any shape or form white. The original purpose of Gothic was many things one of which is the breaking down of stereotypes, the breaking down of culture seperatism and other barriers that society built up to keep people separate. These false Goths do not seem to know or understand that. Nor do they realize the 3 phases of within Gothic history, the older Gothic, the middle gothic and younger Goth; not to mention these false Goths do not understand the term “spooky kid”. Indeed I venture to say that these false Goths are just spooky kids, brought up in idolising gothic culture with no real appreciation of what it really means to be Gothic. So they drab themselves and act as wild and crazy as they want to be, and in so doing make a total mockery of the Gothic world. Is it any wonder that these false Goths claim to be able to do impossible stuff, indeed they live in their own little imaginary world, living the life for the party, with no social responsibility or vision for the world or attempt to try to change it.
that’s my two cents. I don’t care who I offend, if you do not accept the foundations of the Gothic movement, you nothing but a “hot topic” wanna-be Goth, shallow and just another cog in the gearwork of a sick and perverse, narrow minded, egocentric and ethnocentric society which we the real Gothick’s been fighting from since it all began…. Go F off.
